Old Fashioned Fudge
This classic fudge recipe is rich, creamy, and perfect for indulging your sweet tooth. With just a few ingredients, it’s a nostalgic treat that’s easy to make.
INGREDIENTS:
2 cups sugar
4 tablespoons Hershey’s cocoa
1 stick salted butter (8 tablespoons)
1 (5-ounce) can Carnation evaporated milk
For Flavor:
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Optional: Chopped nuts (such as walnuts or pecans), about 1/2 cup
DIRECTIONS:
Prepare the Pan
Line an 8×8-inch pan with parchment paper or lightly grease it. Set aside.
Mix the Dry Ingredients
In a medium saucepan, combine the sugar and cocoa powder. Stir well to break up any lumps.
Add the Wet Ingredients
Add the butter and evaporated milk to the saucepan.
Cook the Mixture
Heat the mixture over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the butter melts and the ingredients are well combined.
Continue cooking, stirring frequently, until the mixture comes to a rolling boil.
Let it boil for about 5-7 minutes, or until it reaches the “soft ball” stage (234-240°F on a candy thermometer). If you don’t have a thermometer, drop a small amount of the mixture into cold water—if it forms a soft ball, it’s ready.
Add Vanilla and Nuts
Remove the saucepan from heat and stir in the vanilla extract. If using nuts, fold them in now.
Beat the Mixture
Using a wooden spoon, beat the mixture vigorously until it begins to thicken and lose its glossy sheen.
Pour and Set
Quickly pour the fudge into the prepared pan, spreading it evenly. Work fast, as it sets quickly.
Cool and Cut
Let the fudge cool completely at room temperature or in the fridge. Once firm, cut into squares and enjoy!
