French Onion Ground Beef and Rice Casserole

INGREDIENTS:

For the Casserole:

1 tablespoon olive oil (or butter)

2 large onions (thinly sliced)

1 lb ground beef

2 cloves garlic (minced)

1 cup uncooked long-grain white rice

2 cups beef broth

1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

1 teaspoon dried thyme

Salt and pepper (to taste)

For the Topping:

1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese (or Gruyère for a French onion twist)

1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Optional Garnish:

Fresh parsley (chopped, for brightness)

DIRECTIONS:

Step 1: Caramelize the Onions

Heat the olive oil in a large skillet or oven-safe pan over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, for 15–20 minutes , until golden brown and caramelized. Remove the onions from the pan and set aside.

Step 2: Cook the Ground Beef

In the same skillet, add the ground beef and cook over medium heat until browned, breaking it into small pieces with a wooden spoon. Drain excess fat if needed.

Stir in the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.

Step 3: Build the Casserole

Return the caramelized onions to the skillet with the beef. Stir in the uncooked rice, beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, salt, and pepper. Mix well to combine.

Bring the mixture to a simmer, then reduce the heat to low and cover. Cook for 15–20 minutes , or until the rice is tender and most of the liquid is absorbed …
