Amish Poor Man’s Steak

A simple Amish-inspired comfort dish made with ground beef patties seasoned with onion soup mix and baked in creamy mushroom gravy. It is hearty, budget-friendly, and perfect served over mashed potatoes, egg noodles, or with dinner rolls.
INGREDIENTS:
1 1/2 lb ground beef 80–85% lean
1 packet dry onion soup mix about 1 oz
1 can condensed cream of mushroom soup 10.5 oz
1/2 cup whole milk plus a little more if needed
DIRECTIONS:
Preheat the oven to 350°F and lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
In a large bowl, gently combine the ground beef and dry onion soup mix until evenly distributed.
Divide the mixture into 6 large or 8 smaller portions.
Shape each portion into a flat oval patty about 3/4 inch thick.
Arrange the patties in a single layer in the prepared baking dish.
In the same bowl, whisk together the condensed cream of mushroom soup and whole milk until smooth and pourable.
Pour the soup mixture evenly over the patties, coating each one.
Cover the baking dish tightly with foil.
Bake covered for 35–40 minutes.
Remove the foil and bake uncovered for another 5–10 minutes, until the gravy thickens slightly and the patties reach 160°F internally.
Let the dish rest for 5 minutes before serving.
Spoon the gravy over each patty and serve with mashed potatoes, buttered egg noodles, or rolls.
